About

Handsworth Stories explores the experiences of one of Britain’s earliest and most significant multicultural communities. The display features Handsworth Songs, an award-winning documentary film directed by John Akomfrah, alongside photographs from the 1979 project Handsworth Self-Portrait. At the heart of the display is the Handsworth Songs documentary, which explores the civil unrest that took place in Handsworth and London in September and October 1985. Directed by John Akomfrah, a Ghanaian-born British artist, the film fuses documentary, archive footage and music to capture the stories of Handsworth residents as economic decline and racial discrimination spilled over into violent unrest.
