- 1864Carl Osswald bought two properties on Inselgasse, now Kochergasse, and had the Bellevue hotel built.

- 1912–13The hotel was completely rebuilt to designs by Paul Lindt and Max Hoffmann, with a replacement twice the size; it reopened in 1913.
- 1914After becoming general, Ulrich Wille used the hotel as army headquarters during the First World War.
- Second World WarThe hotel became a centre of diplomatic and intelligence activity; OSS station chief Allen Dulles frequented its bar.
