Historie
Built to protect Habsburg territory and control a strategic point on the Aare, the castle later became an Effinger family estate and eventually a museum. A canton-established foundation took over the castle, and Museum Aargau assumed museum operations.
- First half of the 13th centuryHabsburg retainers built the castle to protect Eigenamt and control a strategic point on the Aare.
- 1242The castle was first recorded and was home to the Truchsessen of Habsburg and Wildegg.
- 1437Peter von Gryffensee bought the castle from the Hallwyl family.
- 1552Lightning caused a fire that left only the masonry. The castle became habitable again over several years.
- 1825The Erlachhaus was built beside the castle.

- By 1917Eduard Vischer had led repairs and prepared the castle for museum use.
- 2011Stiftung Schlossdomäne Wildegg began managing the whole estate.
