Geschichte

Much of the castle’s present layout dates from its conversion into a prison in the 1830s. Renovations from 1987 to 1992 sought to restore its late-18th-century appearance. The main courtyard hosts Letní shakespearovské slavnosti in July and early August. Concerts are also regularly held there during summer.

  1. 13th c.Špilberk began as a royal residence and defensive fortress protecting Brno.
  2. Mid-14th c.It became the permanent seat of the Moravian margraves under Jan Jindřich.
  3. 1560The castle passed to the city of Brno and became a municipal fortress.
  4. 1742Casemates were built into the side ditches.
  5. 1783Joseph II ordered part of the castle converted into a prison.

  3. 1822Silvio Pellico was imprisoned here; his memoir, published in 1832, made the prison known across Europe.
