Geschichte
Director Monika Meyer-Holzapfel developed the concept of a family recreation area combining a zoo with education. Under Hannes Sägesser, the zoo opened a zoopedagogy centre for children.
- 1900William Gabus left the city 150,000 francs to establish an animal park, preferably in Dählhölzli.
- 1927The city chose Elfenau for the planned zoo.
- 1935The project moved to Dählhölzliwald, where the Burgergemeinde made part of the forest available.
- 1937On 5 June, the zoo opened at a celebration attended by Federal Councillor Rudolf Minger.
- 1988The rebuilt Vivarium reopened.

- 1999–2000A flood destroyed riverside habitats in 1999; rebuilt habitats opened in 2000.
- 2008The zoo added WisentWald and a quarantine station, its first area expansion since 1937.
- 2024–2025The seal habitat was rebuilt from October 2024. The seals returned in spring 2025 after temporary relocation to Sweden.
