History

It was originally planned as the forecourt of a new castle beside the Elbe. After the 1945 destruction, reconstruction took place in stages.

  1. 1549Kurfürst Moritz commissioned a garden here modeled on the Prague Castle garden.
  2. 1709Augustus the Strong commissioned Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann to create an orangery, garden and festival ground.
  3. 1711Work began on the arched galleries, Nymphenbad and Mathematisch-Physikalischer Salon wing.
  4. 1715–1716The Wallpavillon was planned in 1715; construction began the following year.
  5. 1719The complex was inaugurated for the marriage of Frederick August and Maria Josepha.

  1. 1722An arcade-like screen wall temporarily closed the unfinished north side.
  2. 1728Interiors were completed for exhibition galleries and library halls.
  3. 1733Construction stopped after Augustus the Strong died, leaving the palace area open toward Theatre Square.
  4. 1855The Semper Gallery closed the side toward the Elbe, completing the four-wing enclosure.
  5. 1945Bombing extensively damaged the complex, and reconstruction began that year.
  6. 1951Parts of the restored complex opened to visitors.
  7. 1960Further parts reopened.
  8. 1963The complex had been rebuilt.
