Kitzsteinhorn is a glacier ski area on a mountain in Austria’s Hohe Tauern, in the Glockner range. It lies mainly in Kaprun, Salzburg, with its southeast side in Uttendorf.

  1. 1828Johann Entacher made the first recorded ascent with surveyors.
  2. Around 1840Friedrich zu Schwarzenberg made the second ascent.
  3. 1907–09The German and Austrian Alpine Club built Krefelder Hütte.
  4. Early 20th c.Skiing began on the mountain following construction of Krefelder Hütte.
  5. 1965The first section of the Kaprun glacier railway connected the valley to the Alpincenter in two stages.

  1. December 1965The first cable car began operating, opening glacier terrain for skiing.
  2. 1966A third cable-car section connected the Alpincenter to Top of Salzburg.
  3. 1974An underground funicular opened after two and a half years of construction on its 3,295-metre tunnel, adding capacity alongside the cable car.
  4. 2000A fire on the funicular killed 155 people. The line closed, and its above-ground section was subsequently dismantled.
  5. 23 December 2001Gletscherjet I, a 24-person funitel, replaced the funicular.
  6. 19 October 2002Gletscherjet II, a gondola lift, opened.
  7. By 2022Scientists had measured a loss of more than two-thirds of the glacier’s surface area.
