During the Second World War, many collection pieces were moved to safety, while rooms containing monumental works were sealed.

  1. 1698The Antiquities Collection began with an acquisition by a Roman archaeologist.
  2. 1830Part of the Antiquities Collection became publicly accessible when the Altes Museum opened.
  3. 1897–1899Fritz Wolff built the first museum building.
  4. 1901Emperor Wilhelm II inaugurated the first museum building.
  5. 1907–1909Alfred Messel designed a replacement based on Wilhelm von Bode’s idea. Ludwig Hoffmann took over after Messel died in 1909.
