The former granary, built in 1520/21, contains the ticket desk, shop and an exhibition.

Hallwyl was the ancestral castle of the Lords of Hallwyl and the centre of an estate with rights to exploit the lake.

late 12th c.The castle was probably founded as a tower house with a dry moat.
1167The von Hallwyl family appears in a testament.
1256The castle is first recorded.
around 1265A residential building with storerooms and upper-floor living rooms was added beside the stream.
early 14th c.The tower gained a water moat and perimeter wall, and an artificial island with buildings was created in the Aabach.

1415Bernese troops burned the castle during the conquest of Aargau; rebuilding began soon after.
1578–1590Burkhard III von Hallwyl remodelled the castle as a representative residence.
1861 and 1870–1874After prolonged neglect, parts of the castle were rebuilt in neo-Gothic style.
1910Wilhelmina von Hallwyl commissioned major repairs.
1914Most neo-Gothic alterations were reversed.
1925The family foundation began preserving and studying the castle, and it opened to the public.
1994The Canton of Aargau became the castle’s owner.
1997–2004The Canton of Aargau carried out a major renovation.
