Vēsture
Legends place Emperor Frederick Barbarossa asleep inside Untersberg until his resurrection, or Charlemagne inside, watched over by the Untersberger Mandln. The Untersberg Wild Hunt, an Alpine Perchten tradition, has been revived. Marbles from local mills were shipped worldwide, with annual exports reaching 60,000–80,000 pounds. In the 1850s, the Almbach valley had 40 ball mills, with another 90 in the surrounding region. One still operates, mainly as a tourist attraction.
- 12th c.Eberwein, a member of the Berchtesgaden Augustinian monastery, made the first recorded ascent.
- 803Charlemagne held a synod in Salzburg and met Bishop Arno.
- 1306A Salzburg archbishop’s deed recorded the name Vndarnsperch, meaning “Noon Mountain.”
- 1683Marble ball mills were established in Marktschellenberg.
- 1829Johann Nepomuk von Poißl composed an opera inspired by Untersberg.
