Geschiedenis

Before the zoo opened, Ernst Pinkert and Carl Hagenbeck displayed exotic animals at Zum Pfaffendorfer Hof from 1876. During World War I, shortages caused many animals to die or be killed for food. Between its founding and 1931, the grounds also hosted about 40 human exhibitions.

  1. 1878Ernst Pinkert opened Zoo Leipzig as a private zoological garden on the Pfaffendorf estate.
  2. 1883The grounds expanded to three hectares.
  3. 1910–1913An aquarium opened in 1910, followed by a terrarium in 1913.
  4. 1 January 1920Leipzig took over the zoo to restore its facilities.
  5. 1920sArchitect Carl James Bühring added two main routes and designed distinctive brick buildings.
