History

The first building on the site was probably a tower house. The second earl rebuilt the house from a Georgian mansion into a large Tudor Revival manor, starting in 1832. The work was finished in 1862 and gave the house its Neo-Tudor style. Limerick businessman J. P. McManus bought it in 2015.

  1. 1226King Henry III granted an eight-day annual fair at the manor.
  2. 1536The lands of Thomas FitzGerald, 10th Earl of Kildare, were forfeited to the crown.
  3. 1822Viscount Adare became the first Earl of Dunraven and Mount-Earl.
  4. 1832The second earl began rebuilding the house in Tudor Revival style; the work ran to 1862.
  5. 1846Augustus Pugin was hired to design the interiors, including the great hall.
