History
The park formed part of a plan to develop the city’s western edge. By the late 19th century, it was popular across Mexico’s social classes.
- 1592On 11 January 1592, Viceroy Luis de Velasco II ordered a public green space on the site of an Aztec marketplace. Francisco de Avis designed the gardens, with white and black elms brought from Coyoacán. It stretched from today’s Palacio de Bellas Artes to the site of the Hemiciclo a Juárez, covering less than half the current area.
- 17th c.Floods damaged the gardens and trees, and ash trees replaced the old poplars. The park became a major promenade and gathering place.
- 1770Viceroy Marqués de Croix expanded the park over the Santa Isabel and San Diego squares. The present western section had been El Quemadero, where people condemned by the Inquisition were publicly burned.
- 1791The Count of Revillagigedo enclosed the park with a wooden fence and reserved it for the nobility.
- 1821After Mexican Independence, the park became a centre for public celebrations.

- 1846President Santa Anna ordered the fountains filled with alcohol for his triumphal entry into Mexico City.
- 1868–1892Gas lamps were installed in 1868 and replaced by electric lighting in 1892.
- 2012The park reopened on 26 November after eight months of work, including tree planting and restoration of the fountains and Hemiciclo a Juárez.
