History

A cattle market outside the Georgentor gave the area the names Ochsenmarkt and Ochsenplatz. Until the mid-19th century, the square also served as a military parade and drill ground. Alexanderplatz station and the city railway opened in 1882, marking another stage in the square’s development as a transport hub.

  1. 13th c.A hospital called Heiliger Georg stood near the site and gave its name to the Georgentor.
  2. 16th c.The Georgentor became Berlin’s most important city gate.
  3. 1701The surrounding area was officially named Königs Thor Platz.
  4. 1805The square was renamed Alexanderplatz after Tsar Alexander I visited Berlin.
  5. 1848Street fighting and barricades blocked routes through the square during the March Revolution.
