History

Some buildings from the spa’s early years survive. Evariste Mertens designed the spa park.

1691A sulphur-rich spring was discovered near Birrenlauf on the right bank of the Aare, starting the thermal resort.
1696Spring owner Samuel Jenner had a guesthouse built.
1703–04A second guesthouse was added beside the first.
1706–08A cross-wing joined the two guesthouses.
1824–27Architect Hans Conrad Stadler added a semicircular classical-style building.

1881A spa chapel was built in the park. Donations from spa guests funded its expansion, and its interior has a surreal Baroque style.
1991A physiotherapy training centre was established on the thermal-bath grounds.
