Baumkronenpfad is a wildlife-themed treetop walkway in Germany’s Hainich National Park, near Forsthaus Thiemsburg, about 10 kilometres west of Bad Langensalza.

The trail

Walkway height: Rises from 10 to 24 metres
Access: Spiral stairs or lift to walkway level
Approach: About 400 metres to the tower, passing a treehouse and a pond with remains of medieval Thiemsburg. This distance is separate from the circuit.

Open Monday to Sunday, 10:00–19:00.
Storms, thunderstorms, heavy rain or ice can lead to short-notice closures. If the path closes, the Nationalparkzentrum remains open with two experience areas.

Safety

Dogs are not allowed on the canopy path; dog boxes are available.

What you see

The 44-metre observation tower offers views over the forest canopy.

History

The tower was assembled on site from prefabricated sheet-metal sections and steel beams.

2005Opened on 26 August as Germany’s second treetop walkway. Its original route was about 300 metres long, roughly 20–25 metres above ground.
2009A 238-metre second loop opened on 14 May, focusing on the ancient forest.

How to get there

ParkingAddress: Nationalpark Hainich, Thiemsburg 1, 99947 Schönstedt, Bad Langensalza. From the parking area, walk to the visitor centre and restaurant at the former Forsthaus Thiemsburg settlement.
