History

John Montagu was the first British MP to drive to Parliament and taught the future King Edward to drive. As the museum’s collection outgrew Palace House, it moved into estate barns. Leonard Manasseh designed the purpose-built museum, with Ian Baker doing most of the work.

  1. 1952Edward Douglas-Scott-Montagu founded the museum in memory of his father, John, an early motoring pioneer. Its first display was five cars and automobilia in Palace House.
  2. 1964Annual attendance had passed half a million, and the growing collection needed a purpose-built museum.
  3. 1972The purpose-built museum opened on 4 July, with the Duke of Kent conducting the ceremony. It took its current name when it became a charitable trust; the opening also coincided with the UK launch of the Jaguar XJ12.
  4. August 2026The museum trust began seeking a new home as its 60-year lease at Beaulieu approached its end.
