History

Its later roles included serving as army headquarters and a centre of diplomatic and intelligence activity.

  1. 1864Carl Osswald bought two properties on Inselgasse, now Kochergasse, and had the Bellevue hotel built.
  2. 1865The original hotel opened.
  3. 1912–13The hotel was completely rebuilt to designs by Paul Lindt and Max Hoffmann, with a replacement twice the size; it reopened in 1913.
  4. 1914After becoming general, Ulrich Wille used the hotel as army headquarters during the First World War.
  5. Second World WarThe hotel became a centre of diplomatic and intelligence activity; OSS station chief Allen Dulles frequented its bar.
