History
Run by the Florizoone family, Bellewaerde began with exotic birds and Kabouterland, a children’s area with mechanical puppets. It developed from a zoo and safari park into a ride-focused attraction park, while continuing to add animal areas and attractions.
- 1954Bellewaerde opened as a zoo and safari park on former Battle of Bellewaarde ground.
- 1971The park took the name Bellewaerde Park.
- 1972A lion park opened, with safari trains passing through it.
- 1980sThe park shifted toward rides. Frontier City, later called Far West, was a Wild West village with a saloon, shops and rides. Keverbaan, a family coaster, ran from 1981 to 2022.
- 2008Bellewaerde received official zoo status.
