The church has its own choirs and a brass ensemble. It is the main base of the Staats- und Domchor Berlin boys’ choir, linked to the Berlin University of the Arts.

History

The foundation began as a place of Roman Catholic worship. It became Lutheran during the Reformation, later adopted the Reformed confession after the electoral house converted to Calvinism, and became a united Protestant church through the Prussian Union. The end of the monarchy in 1918 marked a turning point for a parish closely tied to the Imperial Court.

  1. 1450A court chapel was consecrated in the new palace.
  2. 1545The Hohenzollern family began using the church as its burial place.
  3. 1894Construction of the present church began to Julius Carl Raschdorff’s plans.
  4. 1905The present church was inaugurated.
  5. 1944An air raid set the dome lantern on fire; it fell into the preaching church.

  1. 1975Reconstruction began. The Memorial Church on the north side was removed, and the design was simplified.
  2. 1993The nave was re-inaugurated at a ceremony attended by Chancellor Helmut Kohl.
  3. 2002Interior restoration was complete.
