Questions and answers

Where are Berner Münster’s original life-size portal figures?

The original life-size figures are displayed at the Bernisches Historisches Museum. Copies replaced them after damage from 20th-century air pollution.

What organs does Berner Münster have?

The main organ stands on the gallery opposite the choir. Kuhn rebuilt it in 1999, reusing parts of its old Baroque case; its current four-keyboard setup dates from the 1998–1999 restorations. A second organ, made by Metzler in 1982, occupies a swallow’s-nest installation in the choir.

Was the Münsterplattform always a park beside Berner Münster?

No. The terrace was built as a churchyard between 1334 and the mid-15th century and became an open plaza in the 20th century. During the Reformation, paintings and statues from the cathedral’s altars were discarded there; archaeological digs later recovered some of them.
