Why go

  • The free, 7,000-square-metre BIKINI BERLIN Shopping Garden was modelled on New York’s High Line and overlooks the zoo, Breitscheidplatz and the Memorial Church.
  • The 200-metre Bikini-Haus takes its name from an open floor that once resembled a bare midriff; the gap is now enclosed with floor-to-ceiling glass.
  • The Monkey Bar atop the 25hours Hotel overlooks the Berlin Zoo monkey exhibit.

What's inside

  • Zoo Palast cinema, with 1,700 seats.
  • The 25hours Hotel, with 149 rooms; the Monkey Bar sits above it and looks over the zoo’s monkey exhibit.
  • Huthmacher-Haus, a 15-storey, 60-metre office tower designed by Paul Schwebes and Hans Schoszberger. A yellow giraffe on its facade refers to the zoo.
  • A car park beside the Aquarium.
  • The Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church stands opposite the mall. Its damaged tower section was preserved as a war memorial in the rebuilt church.

History

After the Berlin Wall was built, Bikini-Haus lost customers from East Berlin. Bayerische Hausbau bought the complex in 2002. During renovation, Bikini-Haus was stripped back to its concrete frame, and its original windows and facade elements were replaced with reconstructions.

  1. 1919Zoo Palast first opened as Ufa-Palast am Zoo, premiering Madame Dubarry.
  2. mid-1920sHans Poelzig designed an earlier two-storey building on the site, with shops, restaurants and the Capitol am Zoo cinema.
  3. 23 November 1943An Allied bombing raid destroyed most of the earlier development on the site.
  4. 1953The remaining buildings from the earlier development had been demolished.
  5. 1955–1957Paul Schwebes and Hans Schoszberger designed the present Bikini-Haus as part of the Zentrum am Zoo ensemble.
