History

The move in 1862 brought the garden to its present site in Rabbental.

1789Bern’s first botanical garden opened in Marzili.
1796–1815The first garden moved to the Harnischturm on Langmauerweg 110, where it remained until 1815.
1804Another botanical garden stood in the courtyard of the present-day city library.
1859The garden became part of the University of Bern.
1859–1862Construction of the present garden began in 1859; the move followed in 1862.
