History

The garden occupies the former Schönau villa site. The property was sold to the canton on condition that it be used by the University of Zurich.

  1. 1833Construction began on the older «zur Katz» garden beside the former fortification.
  2. 1971Zurich voters approved a new garden in the Bodmer–Abegg family’s former park in Weinegg.
  3. 1972–1977Landscape architect Fred Eicher designed the garden, built to replace the older «zur Katz» site. Hans and Annemarie Hubacher’s architecture offices designed the three domed greenhouses using curved acrylic panels.
  4. 1977The new garden opened.
