History

Royal troops destroyed it around 1225. Queen Marie of Romania received the castle in 1920, when Brașov gave it to her. Drawn to its medieval atmosphere, she made it one of her two favourite residences, alongside Balcic. Restoration in the 1920s, led by Karel Líman, turned the old fortress into a royal residence. The communist government seized it in 1948 after the royal family was expelled. In 2006 it went back to the Habsburg heirs, who opened it in 2009 as the country's first private museum.
