History

Montbenon was once covered with vineyards. After the city acquired the land, it became a festival and military exercise ground; a promenade and trees followed. The park now includes the Casino de Montbenon, the Palais de justice de Montbenon and Mercié’s Guillaume Tell statue. The Casino opened in 1909, in a Belle Époque building dating to 1908. The current esplanade and promenade Schnetzler took shape between 1978 and 1984, alongside an underground car park built into the hillside.
