What's on here

Why go

  • The Rosekeller houses Germany’s oldest cask wine, a Rüdesheim dating to 1653; the cask has been topped up several times.
  • Four carved display casks decorate the hall; the largest, the 1737 Delphinfass, could hold 37,000 bottles and no longer stores wine.
  • Max Slevogt’s four frescoes cover the walls of Hauff Hall, where a whisper can carry from one end to the other.
  • Choose from about 650 German wine varieties.

History

A 1342 document barred anyone except council-appointed wine stewards from serving wine. Until 1807, entry to the Apostel- and Rosekeller required a council member’s company. Floods and fires have repeatedly prompted restoration.

  1. 1330–1815Bremen’s council held the exclusive right to serve white wine in the city.
  2. 1405The city wine cellar moved into the newly built town hall vaults, where German wine has been stored and sold since.
  3. 1550The cellar expanded with the Apostelkeller and Senatszimmer.
  4. 1599The Rosekeller was added for especially valuable wines.
  5. 1620The Bacchuskeller and Hauffsaal were built as wine cellars.
Show all
  1. 1826Writer Wilhelm Hauff visited; his visit inspired a novella, and the hall later took his name.
  2. 1890–1914Kaiser Wilhelm II visited the Kaiserzimmer annually for a morning reception.
  3. 1926The Bacchuskeller was converted into a dining room.
  4. 1927Max Slevogt’s frescoes were added to the Hauffsaal, inspired by Hauff’s work.
