History

Brisbane’s second municipal botanic gardens were created because the city-centre gardens had no room to expand and often flooded. The original gardens are at Gardens Point in the Brisbane CBD. Kenzo Ogata designed the Japanese Garden as his final work, using Australian trees, shrubs and flowers.

  1. 1970–1976Brisbane City Council established the gardens in 1970; they officially opened in 1976.
  2. 1975The Mount Coot-tha Library opened at the gardens.
  3. 1977The Tropical Display Dome opened in December.
  4. 1989The Japan Pond and Garden, from the Japanese Government Pavilion at World Expo 88, opened on 6 February.
  5. 1995–1996The Freedom Wall’s foundation stone was laid in 1995, and the wall was unveiled in 1996.
