History
Busch Stadium is the third St. Louis stadium to carry that name. The former Sportsman’s Park took the name Busch Stadium in 1953. The new ballpark’s north wing remained unfinished during the first half of the 2006 season because construction depended on demolition of the old stadium.
- 2001The Cardinals and Missouri agreed to build a new stadium downtown beside the old one.
- 2003–2004Construction began in December 2003, with official ceremonies in January 2004.
- 2005Busch Memorial Stadium was demolished between November 7 and December 8.
- 2006Natural grass was installed in March. The stadium opened on April 4 with an exhibition game between the Memphis Redbirds and Springfield Cardinals. The Cardinals played their first Major League game there on April 10, beating Milwaukee 6–4.
- 2006The Cardinals won all three home games in the World Series and claimed their tenth title. They were the first team since the 1923 Yankees to open a new stadium and win the championship.
