History
It was the world's first funicular to use a clamp brake instead of a rack brake. Its nearly 4 km route was divided into three sections. In 1975 the second and third sections became an aerial cable car, while the lower funicular stayed in service.
- 1893The railway opens as an electric funicular, built by Franz Josef Bucher-Durrer and Josef Durrer-Gasser.
- 1970Lightning sets the mountain hotel on fire, destroying it with the top station.
- 1975The upper two sections become an aerial cable car; the lower funicular stays in service.
- 2011The 1975 cable car makes its last run.
- 2012The new Garaventa pendulum cable car opens, with an open upper deck on its gondolas.
