History

The café-brasserie probably took its name from the Saint-Gothard rail tunnel project, completed between 1872 and 1880. Its history is closely connected with Fribourg’s breweries. During the Belle Époque, it gained a reputation as one of the city’s popular addresses and was enlarged.

  1. Early 1850sMerchant Michel Poletti acquired the property at 16–18 Rue du Pont-Muré.
  2. 1861Poletti transferred a tavern licence to the house after buying Brasserie Fraisse.
  3. 14 December 1869Michel Poletti leased the establishment to brewer Louis Schaller for three years.
  4. 1898Work gave the façade its present appearance.
  5. 1911Tanner Jean Renz carried out the final enlargement.
