Café Landtmann / Vienna 🇦🇹 AustriaClub House
History
It stood opposite the building sites of the new Town Hall and the new university, and the remains of the Löwelbastei lay beside it, where the Burgtheater was built later. Landtmann aimed to make it the most elegant café in Vienna, and locals took to it from the start. Their son Erwin ran it from 1949 until 1976. In the mid-1970s the café risked becoming a bank branch, and Anita and Herbert Querfeld, backed by Helmut Zilk, helped save it. A full renovation followed in 1982. Sigmund Freud, Gustav Mahler, Peter Altenberg, Felix Salten and Emmerich Kálmán were among its regular guests.
- 1873Franz Landtmann opens the café on the Ringstraße.
- 1881The brothers Wilhelm and Rudolf Kerl take it over and extend it toward Oppolzergasse.
- 1916Karl Kraus, a former butcher and restaurateur, buys the café.
- 1926Konrad and Angela Zauner buy the café.
- 1929Architect Ernst Meller designs the interior of the renovation that survives today.
