History

  1. 1967Construction began on 19 February. Marathon Realty and Husky Oil planned the tower as new Calgary head offices, linking the project to Canada’s centennial and downtown renewal.
  2. 1968The tower opened as Husky Tower on 30 June, with an observation-level lounge and the Hitching Post restaurant.
  3. 1971It took the name Calgary Tower on 1 November, in tribute to Calgary’s citizens.
  4. 1983The west tower of Petro-Canada Centre surpassed Calgary Tower as the city’s tallest structure.
  5. 1987–1990Renovations added an upper-level souvenir shop and revolving restaurant. A glass rotunda became the new lobby in 1990.

  2. 2003Vertigo Theatre began operating at the tower’s base, presenting mystery plays for adult and youth audiences.
