History
The Haywards built their collection through travel in Europe and support for contemporary Australian artists. Their house hosted cultural figures including Judith Anderson, John McCallum, Laurence Olivier, Vivien Leigh and artist Kathleen Sauerbier.
- 1935The estate was given to Ursula Barr Smith and Edward Hayward as a wedding gift, and they established Carrick Hill.
- 1937–1939James Campbell Irwin designed the mansion, built by Fricker Brothers with architectural pieces and furniture salvaged from a 16th-century mansion at Beaudesert Estate.
- 1944The Haywards moved into the house five years after its completion.
- 1958A fire destroyed the library and about 50 rare prints by Alexandre Jacovleff. The Haywards restored the library to its original state.
- 1970The Haywards gave the estate and its contents to the South Australian government in 1970; formal transfer followed Edward’s death.
