History
Its design is attributed to Antonio Ferreira de Souza Calheiros. On the ground floor Macedo ran the office that collected entry and tithe duties. The house often hosted meetings of conspirators of the Inconfidência Mineira. After the conspiracy was discovered, it hid members of the movement, and during the repression it housed the viceroy's troops and held prisoners of high rank.
- 1782–1784The merchant João Rodrigues de Macedo has the house built in the barroco mineiro style.
- 1789Poet Claudio Manuel da Costa takes his own life in his cell under the staircase.
- 1802The treasury takes the house from Macedo for good.
- 1803The house is valued at 40 contos de réis, then the costliest house in the captaincy.
- 1820–1844The house is enlarged to absorb the Casa de Fundição do Ouro and the Casa da Moeda.
