History
The Teatro Kursaal opened as Lugano’s first gaming hall with a café. During the autumn fair, visitors played card and dice games there.
- 19th c.Italian architect Achille Sfondrini designed the original casino and theatre.
- 1885The Lugano Theatre Society formed to adapt the building for performances, dances and other events.
- 1912The venue received a gambling licence.
- 1922The society adopted the name Società del Teatro e Casinò Kursaal di Lugano.
- 1946The theatre earned a record 641,777 Swiss francs from opera, plays, concerts and films.

- 1993A revision of gambling rules allowed large table games.
- 1997–2001The theatre closed after its last show in April 1997; the building was demolished in 2001 for the casino’s expansion.
