Castelo de Beja is a medieval hilltop fortress in central Beja, in southern Portugal’s Alentejo region. It stands within the city’s northwest fortifications, in Santiago Maior.

History

Afonso Henriques’s forces captured Beja in 1159 but withdrew four months later. An expedition from Santarém retook the town in December 1162. Almansor captured the area in 1191, and it returned to Christian rule in the 1230s. In the Roman era, Beja was known as Pax Julia and became one of Lusitania’s three Roman jurisdictions.

  1. 3rd–4th centuryThe Roman defensive walls are thought to date from this period.
  2. 1253Afonso III began restoring the walls. For ten years, the work was funded by two-thirds of the tithes collected by Beja’s churches.
  3. c. 1307Dinis continued rebuilding the walls and towers; a carved inscription identifies a tower built along the wall around this time.
  4. 1310Dinis ordered construction of the keep.
  5. 1347Work on the walls began under João Domingues de Beja and Afonso Mendes.

  1. Early 16th centuryManuel I began a fortification project, possibly adding the keep’s vaulted ceiling.
  2. 1644A bastion design by Nicolas de Langres was approved during the Portuguese Restoration War.
  3. 1790Part of the fortifications was demolished to provide stone for a church.

  5. 1938Restoration rebuilt the Évora Gate and walls, cleared obstructions and reconstructed the alcáçova, or citadel.
  6. November 2014–19 July 2016The keep closed after part of its balcony battlements collapsed, damaging the lower balcony and stairway entrance; it reopened after restoration.
