Why go

  • The coloured ceramic parts of the building, from the Vilmos Zsolnay company, famous across Europe.
  • The steel framework of the hall, made at the Schlick iron foundry.
  • The joint opening of five district halls, which symbolically linked them into one network.

History

Early plans required that only inspected food be sold. Many rules governed how goods were sold and handled. The new rules were not entirely successful, as some goods failed the quality checks. A fire broke out in the nearly finished building and caused serious damage. A year-long investigation never established the cause. The builders had insured the building, which made the loss easier to bear. The opening ceremony also marked five new district halls opened together. A board of directors managed the network, with a director at its head.

  1. 1860sThe idea of building market halls was first proposed to improve food supply.
  2. 1894A general assembly proposed putting the plan of Samu Pecz into practice.
  3. 1896Work stopped in July, ten days short of completion, after a fire caused serious damage.
  4. 1897Traders could sell from 1 February 1897 and paid no rent before the opening.
  5. Second World WarThe hall suffered significant damage.
