History

Hungarian writers and journalists, including Gyula Krúdy, regularly gathered at the hotel. World War II left the building badly damaged.

1886–88Architect Vilmos Freund planned and built the spa.
1896The Grand Hotel Royal opened on 30 April to welcome visitors to the Millennium Exhibition.
1903Hotel guests gained direct access to the spa.
1909Hungary’s first airplane was displayed in a hotel courtyard.
1915The south wing ballroom became the Royal Apollo cinema.

1944The historic spa ceased operating and is described as having remained closed since.
1953The building was restored as a hotel.
1956Revolt organisers gathered at the hotel during the Hungarian Revolution. Soviet tanks shelled it on 4 November, and a fire destroyed the roof.
1959The cinema reopened as the Red Star cinema, with an entrance on Hársfa Street.
1961The rebuilt hotel reopened on 20 August with 367 guest rooms.
1983The abandoned spa was rediscovered, and a proposal to turn it into parking was rejected.
1991The Grand Hotel Royal closed in October.
1997The cinema stopped operating in autumn.
2003The Corinthia Grand Hotel Royal reopened on 30 April after being rebuilt behind its historic façade.
