History

The name derives from “Convent Garden”, referring to the former abbey garden. The produce market grew into England’s leading market for vegetables, fruit and flowers. Inigo Jones designed the piazza with arcades and St Paul’s Church. This design was new in London and influenced later urban development.

  1. 1654An open-air fruit and vegetable market began on the south side of the square, beside Bedford House’s garden wall.
  2. 1670The Earl of Bedford secured a royal licence for a daily fruit and vegetable market, except Sundays and Christmas Day.
  3. 1830Charles Fowler’s neoclassical market building was completed to cover and organise trading.
  4. From 1860The market complex expanded several times, adding its distinctive roof structure.
  5. 1904Jubilee Market was added for foreign flowers.

  3. 1980The central building reopened as a shopping centre with cafés, pubs, shops and craft markets.
