History

As West Berlin’s only opera house, the rebuilt Deutsche Oper covered the city’s full opera repertoire.

  1. 1911Charlottenburg built the Deutsches Opernhaus to Heinrich Seeling’s plans. The neoclassical building had twelve Ionic columns in pairs on its main façade.
  2. 7 November 1912The opera house opened with Beethoven’s Fidelio, conducted by Ignatz Waghalter.
  3. 1925After Charlottenburg joined Greater Berlin, the house was renamed Städtische Oper. From that year, Lizzie Maudrick gradually formed an independent ballet company from the opera ballet.
  4. 1933The opera came under the Reich Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda. Nazi authorities barred artists including Fritz Stiedry and Alexander Kipnis from presenting their works there.
  5. 1935Paul Baumgarten enlarged the building, added a Führerloge and reduced its historical capacity from 2,300 to 2,098 seats.
