Shorts
History
Gabriel von Seidl designed the museum, and his brother Emmanuel continued the work after Gabriel’s death. The buildings were reconstructed in their original form, while the displays were renewed.
- Middle AgesThe island was used for rafting wood.
- After 1899Flood protection was built after regular flooding.
- 1903Oskar von Miller founded the museum on 28 June. The city offered the island as its site, and it was renamed Museumsinsel.
- 12 November 1906A temporary collection opened to the public at the National Museum.
- 13 November 1906The foundation stone for the permanent museum was laid.

- 1934Fritz Todt became the museum’s director.
- November 1937–January 1938The antisemitic exhibition “Le Juif éternel” attracted more than 400,000 visitors.
- 1944By the end of the year, bombing had damaged or destroyed 80% of the buildings and 20% of the exhibits.
- 1945Karl Bässler helped prevent demolition of the last surviving bridge to Museum Island.
- May 1948Regular exhibitions began reopening.
- 1970sThe museum’s mission shifted toward explaining the cultural significance of science and technology.
- 1983A fire destroyed the marine and engine sections.
