History

For centuries, the marshy islands formed by the Rhône’s meanders served as common pasture for Sion’s bourgeois residents. Engineer Ignace Venetz devised chimney sluices that allowed fertile silt to reach nearby land. A stony part of the grounds was leased for gravel extraction, and the operator was prohibited from filling in its excavation.

  1. 1860Railway construction required the Rhône to be embanked above the level of the plain, making the marshland accessible.
  2. 1912Sion's bourgeois council assigned 400-toise plots to residents, who had two years to cultivate them.
  3. 1970A public vote backed leisure development around the water; a campsite, restaurant and sports facilities were completed that year.
  4. 2017The gravel pit closed in November, and its facilities were removed to return the area to nature.
