History

Johan III had a castle built on the island in the late 16th century, for his wife. It burned to the ground in 1661. Hedwig Eleonora then began the present palace in 1662 as a pleasure house, not a fortress. Nicodemus Tessin the Elder designed it and kept the old walls and vaulted cellars. After his death, his son Nicodemus Tessin the Younger took over the building work. Gustav III used it as a summer residence, and the palace theatre reached its golden age under him.
