History
Bombing in World War II destroyed the Wilhelminian-style buildings on the site. The ruins were cleared in the late 1940s. After the Berlin Wall fell, Dussmann re-established itself in East Berlin and sought office space. When no bookseller or fashion chain rented the lower floors, Dussmann used them for the store. In its first year, the store welcomed two million customers and recorded turnover of 28 million DM.
- 1997The building opened as Dussmann-Haus. Its classical music department was described as Europe’s largest when the store opened.
- 2004The converted third floor opened to visitors.
- 2008The music department in the side building was substantially expanded.
- 2010A concentrated selection of foreign-language materials was introduced.
