History

After Disney died, the company dropped the plan to operate his city without his guidance. Designers combined ideas for a technology park and an international World’s Fair theme. A later overhaul replaced Future World with World Celebration, World Discovery and World Nature.

  1. 1960sWalt Disney conceived EPCOT as a future city, with a plan for 20,000 residents and a living laboratory for technology and urban planning.
  2. 1979Construction began with a groundbreaking ceremony on October 1.
  3. 1982EPCOT Center opened. Its opening ceremony in front of Spaceship Earth also dedicated the attraction. Opening day had six Future World pavilions and nine World Showcase pavilions.
  4. 1986 and 1989The Living Seas and Wonders of Life pavilions joined the park.
  5. 2021Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure opened in the France pavilion on October 1.
