History
The engineer Juan de León y Castillo designed the lighthouse. The decision to build it was taken in 1861, and he was commissioned to draw up the project in 1884. A private landing quay was built so that building materials could come in by sea. The light first shone in 1890 and steamships on the transatlantic route used it for orientation. It was electrified in 1906, and since 1973 it has been automated and runs without keepers. It was closed for ten years and reopened to the public in 2019.
