History

Its first full public presentation was in Madrid in 1989. A 1999 extension added exhibition space, and a later expansion is scheduled to open in stages from 2026.

  1. 1982Hildy and Ernst Beyeler established the foundation to hold their collection, assembled over about 50 years.
  2. 1989The collection was first shown in full at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid.
  3. September 1994Construction of Renzo Piano’s museum began in Berower Park.
  4. 18 October 1997The museum opened with 140 works, including 23 by Picasso.
  5. 1998Christo and Jeanne-Claude wrapped 178 trees in the garden and adjacent Berower Park.

  1. 1999The museum was extended by 12 metres, adding 458 square metres of exhibition space.
  2. 2013–2014Micheline Renard donated works by Jean Dubuffet, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Sam Francis and Sigmar Polke; the gift was shown in 2014.
  3. 2026–2027The expansion is scheduled to open in stages from 26 September 2026, with full opening on 14 January 2027.
