History

It opened in 1978.

  1. 1976After Léonard Gianadda found remains of a temple to Mercurius on a building plot at Martigny’s edge, he founded the foundation in memory of his younger brother Pierre, who died in a plane crash that year. It aims to commemorate Pierre and promote Martigny’s history through temporary cultural events.
  2. 1978The foundation opened to the public. Its first exhibition included paintings attributed to Dürer, Rembrandt, Rubens and possibly Picasso; these were later exposed as fraudulent.
  3. 1980The major temporary exhibition series began. Early exhibitions included Paul Klee and Picasso, organized with art critic André Kuenzi.
