History
Built in the 1950s at António de Oliveira Salazar’s request, the hotel was intended to host important foreign visitors. Monteiro’s design team included several young architects, among them his son António.
- 1952Architect Porfírio Pardal Monteiro began designing the hotel.
- 1958The Ritz name was agreed with the Charles Ritz chain.
- 1959Jorge Ferreira Chaves continued the design and supervised construction through the opening, with Leonardo Rey Colaço de Castro Freire helping complete the project after Monteiro’s death.
- 1997The hotel became associated with the Four Seasons group.
